Accessibility

Access keys

Not every user has a graphic environment with a mouse or other pointing device. Some users rely on keyboard, alternative keyboard or voice input to navigate links, activate form controls, etc. We have therefore included access keys and a tab index for the main navigation throughout the site. The access key is shown in the alt text.

Windows users can navigate with the accesskey feature by typing ALT+Accesskey. On the Mac, you would use CTRL+Accesskey. Internet Explorer users may also need to hit the “enter” key to activate a link.

Windows users will find that accesskeys take precedence over application commands, which can still be accessed from the keyboard by first typing the menu shortcut key (usually ALT) followed by the letter corresponding to the desired menu item.

  • a = home
  • b = about us
  • c = facts
  • d = quit smoking
  • e = discuss online
  • f = campaign
  • g = contact

Font size

All content in this site is styled using css. Font sizes are set using relative values and therefore visitors may resize the font by adjusting their browser settings.

To find out how to do this for the browser you are using try this handy guide http://www.w3.org/WAI/changedesign.html

Sensible design

We aim to make this site accessible to all. Some of the principles we have worked to for achieving this are:

  • Designing the site for a 800x600 view so horizontal scrolling is not required
  • Using meaningful ALT text for all images to provide descriptive text
  • Using descriptive hyperlink text
  • Avoiding the use of frames, which are difficult for special browsers to interpret
  • Using an easier to read non-serif font type which can be resized
