Roy Castle

In 1992 the entertainer Roy Castle was diagnosed with lung cancer. He had never smoked and blamed the many years he had spent breathing in other people's smoke in the clubs where he performed for his illness. In January 1994 he agreed to give his name to the charity, and spent the last months of his life campaigning to raise awareness of lung cancer and fundraising to build a research center for the study of lung cancer. Roy died in September 1994, but his dream lived on. The Roy Castle International Centre for Lung Cancer Research was opened in May 1998.

In showbusiness, Roy was known by all his pals as 'A great all-rounder', which meant that he could play most musical instruments, sing, dance and break records too! Harry Seacombe said at Roy's funeral ' I am sure that if Roy put his mind to embroidery, he would have been a master at that too!'

You may have seen Roy presenting Record Breakers, if not ask your older brothers and sisters, or your mum and dad. Your parents or grandparents may remember Roy for his musical talents and appearances in the Carry On movies.
