The lung cancer nursing team at University Hospital Coventry and Warwickshire (UHCW) NHS Trust is celebrating after being named ‘Lung Cancer Nurse Team of the Year 2015’ by the Roy Castle Lung Cancer Foundation.

The team scooped the prize at an event in Windsor in November, after being put forward by their patients and their carers. There were over 80 nominations received from across the UK.  The people who nominated the team praised them for the support they provided to patients and families at a difficult time.

The Roy Castle Lung Cancer Foundation, created in honour of the former “Recordbreakers” presenter, raises funds for lung cancer research as well as providing support to families.

As well as their trophy, the team are being awarded with prize money of £500 to spend on further improvements to patient care.

The nurses intend to use the money to purchase an information trolley and some nebuliser machines that are provided to patients in their own home that can help with breathing difficulties.

Nicola Jackson, Lung Cancer Nurse Specialist at University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire NHS Trust (UHCW), said:

“We are extremely delighted to have been nominated and win this award.  We feel privileged to do our jobs and we pride ourselves on providing an holistic service for all of our patients and their carers.

“We feel honoured to be recognised in this way.”

Mark Radford, Chief Nursing Officer at UHCW, said:

“I’m so proud of the team for winning this award, especially as they were nominated by patients and carers.

“The lung cancer team provides excellent care and support to patients and their families, demonstrating compassion at the time when it’s needed most.

“They also participate in leading research projects, helping us to find the best treatments for patients with lung cancer, now and in the future.”

Lorraine Dallas, Director of Information and Support at the Roy Castle Lung Cancer Foundation, said:

“Roy Castle Lung Cancer Foundation knows that specialist nurses are vital in caring, supporting and treating people affected by lung cancer.  We set up the Nursing Awards this year and asked patients to nominate nursing staff who had given them outstanding support.

“We are delighted that the Coventry team won this award.  It reflects the work done by the whole team to make a difference to those affected by this disease which causes distress to thousands of families each year.”
