We provide a comprehensive information, support and advocacy service for people affected by lung cancer throughout the UK.

Common symptoms

There are a variety of ways in which lung cancer may make itself known. Some people only discover it during a routine medical check-up, whilst others may have had signs and symptoms for many months.

Lung cancer can be cured if diagnosed early, so see your doctor straight away if you have any of the following symptoms:

    • A cough that doesn’t go away after two to three weeks
    • Worsening of a long-standing cough
    • Persistent chest infections
    • Coughing blood
    • Unexplained breathlessness
    • Unexplained tiredness or lack of energy
    • Unexplained weight loss
    • Persistent chest and/or shoulder pain

These symptoms may not be serious, in which case, you’ve got nothing to lose by getting them checked out. If they are serious, you’ve got everything to gain - early diagnosis can save your life.
