Colin Montgomerie launches £5.2m appeal for Lung Cancer Centre

Colin Montgomerie was the guest of honor at a civic reception at City Chambers in Glasgow at the end of November to launch the £5.2 million pound appeal for funds to create ‘The Elizabeth Montgomerie Centre’. The centre which will be based in Glasgow is a joint venture with The Roy Castle Lung Cancer Foundation and will be the UK centre of excellence for the support of lung cancer patients, carers and health professionals. Its research programme in patient support will be world leading.

Named after Colin’s mother Elizabeth who died of lung cancer in 1991 the centre aims to have a profound impact on the future of lung cancer. It will provide the highest quality information and support for patients and carers. It will also offer first class training for lung cancer specialists, a UK-wide advice line for patients and carers and research into all aspects of patient support.

There are currently no such centres catering to this need anywhere in Europe. Colin and the Foundation are currently looking at several sites across the city.

Colin who is leading the capital appeal to generate the funds required for the centre was joined at City Chambers by the charity’s founder Professor Ray Donnelly and senior members of staff. The reception was hosted by the Lord Provost. Guests included Shona Robison, Scottish Minister for Public Health, and a number of leading Scottish business people.

Colin Montgomerie said “I am thrilled to be working with The Roy Castle Lung Cancer Foundation on this pioneering project. It’s important that we start to raise the £5.2 million needed for the centre to be up and running in 2010. I have of course been personally affected by lung cancer and am proud to be able to put my mother’s name to this fantastic project.”

Professor Ray Donnelly said: “We are delighted to have Colin leading this Appeal – his profile will be a significant contribution in helping lung cancer patients throughout the UK. He has personally donated a proportion of the funds we are appealing to the public to help us raise giving us a great boost at launch. We are also grateful to the Lord Provost and the city of Glasgow for their support in working with us on finding a suitable building.”
