The Foundation's research
The Roy Castle Lung Castle Foundation’s primary role is research into the early detection of lung cancer. Lung cancer is the biggest cancer killer in the world - even with government and voluntary smoking cessation campaigns,
Prevention and control are of major interest to both those who have stopped smoking - and who remain at high risk of lung cancer for many years – as well as the 10% of lung cancer patients who have never smoked.
The development of Liverpool Lung Project, which is a molecular-epidemiological research programme into the early stages of lung cancer and its detection, may provide us with a way forward. We now have an opportunity, through this major research programme, to identify individuals who at are risk of getting lung cancer before developing clinical symptoms. The LLP works together with the Molecular Oncology Unit’s research into the development of early lung cancer molecular bio-markers.
The multi-million pound investment by the Roy Castle Lung Cancer Foundation into the early detection of lung cancer is supported by the development of international collaborations with both academic institutions and commercial organisations in Europe and the USA. The Liverpool Lung Project has been accredited by the National Cancer Research Institute and makes a major contribution to lung cancer trials in the UK.
