It is with great sadness that we share news of the death of our Trustee, Peter Rainey.
Peter worked in the technology sector in sales, business development and management roles, and latterly owned a consulting and training business.
He was diagnosed with lung cancer in 2004, and first became involved with our charity as a supporter and advocate in 2006 when we were campaigning for the introduction of the ban on smoking in enclosed public places.
Peter subsequently became a trustee in 2011, and his particular interest was in lung cancer prevention. Never afraid to offer honest, critical and heartfelt advice, he fervently backed efforts to help people to quit or avoid smoking. To this end, he devoted himself to supporting and promoting the charity’s Cut Films project.
He was also an active member of our Grants Committee, as well as a patient representative on committees of the National Cancer Research Institute and Cancer Research UK.
Above all, Peter was a true gentleman who made a real difference to those with lung cancer. His efforts will not only benefit those who suffer today, but future generations will also have cause to be grateful to him. We have lost a wonderful friend at the tragically early age of 61. His loss reminds us all of how much we still have to do.
We offer our deepest condolences to his wife Liz, and all their family and friends, and thank Peter himself for his passion, commitment and unwavering support.
